How much Methmail will cost
Methmail will live on subscriptions, not ads: the people who use it will pay for it. Encryption and tracking protection will be the same on every plan: you'll pay for storage and addresses. The closed beta will be free because Methmail will have a free plan, Start: one mailbox, by invitation. The prices below are a preview, and there's no payment yet: we'll open it later.

Prices are preliminary: we’ll confirm them when payments open. Renewal will cost the same as the first purchase.
What every plan includes
All of this will be on the free Start plan too: you won't have to pay for protection.
Encryption
We will not keep a record of who writes to whom: senders and recipients will be stored encrypted along with the message. What will remain in delivery logs. Your keys will also encrypt message text, attachments and subject lines. What Methmail won't be able to do.
The inventory
Everything we will keep about you will fit on one short list. We will publish it before launch. The first rows are already printed.
No phone number
No phone number or other email address will be required to sign up. Sometimes your browser will solve a small computational puzzle: this is how we stop bots without tracking you.
Export
You will be able to export your emails in standard formats (EML and MBOX) and your keys in OpenPGP format.
Images and tracking pixels
Images will show right away, through our proxy; known tracking pixels won't be loaded. What the sender still learns.
Tracking tags in links
When you open an email, Methmail will strip known tracking tags from its links, such as utm_ and fbclid. What the cleanup won't remove.
One-click unsubscribe
If a mailing list supports one-click unsubscribe, you'll be able to unsubscribe with a single button. What the sender will learn.
Link check
Before you follow a link, Methmail will show which site it leads to. What the check doesn't decide.
How to pay
You'll be able to pay by card on Stripe's page, and the seller for this purchase will be Link, a Stripe service: your statement will show “LINK.COM* METHMAIL”. Your plan will turn on right after payment or, if you choose, later: on a random day within a week. By card, you'll be able to pay for one period or set up auto-renewal; you'll be able to cancel auto-renewal anytime, and your plan will keep working until the end of the paid period.
If you stop paying
When your paid period ends, everything will keep working as before for 30 more days. We will remind you 14 days and 3 days before, and on the last day: by email to your mailbox and with a line in your settings.
Then your plan will become Start. If you stop paying, we won't delete anything: your email and addresses will stay, and export will keep working. If your email takes up more space than the free plan allows, you will still be able to read and search it, but new email won't be accepted and sending will stop until there's room. Our server will answer senders with a temporary refusal: their servers usually keep retrying for several days, then return the email to its sender. Email to your own domain will stop being accepted after the grace period.
We won't delete mailboxes for inactivity, paid or free. Its owner will be able to delete a mailbox, with a delay so a hijacker can't. We'll close a mailbox only for breaking the acceptable use rules or when the law requires it.
If Methmail shuts down
We will give at least 90 days' notice. Export will work throughout.
Questions
Is there a free plan?
Yes, Start, by invitation. Paying members will get five invites a year.
Can I get a refund?
Yes: within 30 days of your first payment, we'll refund you in full. You'll be able to request it in Methmail, under Plan and billing on the device you paid from. A card payment goes back to the card.
What happens if Methmail shuts down?
We'll give at least 90 days' notice. Until the last day, you'll be able to export your emails in standard formats (EML and MBOX) and your keys in OpenPGP format.
Can I pay without a card, or from another country?
We'll name the ways to pay without a card once we've decided them. Which countries you can pay by card from depends on the payment systems' rules; we'll say exactly before launch.
Which plan includes a custom domain?
Custom domains will come with paid plans from the public launch. Personal will include one custom domain, Pro three.
How is Personal different from Pro?
In storage, and in the number of addresses and custom domains. Encryption and tracking protection are the same on both: every plan has them.
What will count toward my storage?
Emails, attachments and files will share one storage space. Only deleting permanently will free it up: emails in the Trash still take up space. A second sign-in step and a confirmed recovery phrase will add +5 GB and +5 GB of storage on any plan.
What happens if my storage runs out?
New emails won't be accepted until there's room again. Senders' servers usually keep retrying for a few days: if you free up space in time, the emails will arrive. You'll still be able to read and search your emails, but sending will stop too: a copy of each email needs room in Sent.
