Methmail is still being built. These are the rules we build it by.
Principles
- We say what we will keep before we start. We will publish the data inventory before launch.
- We don’t promise what can’t be checked. When there is no way to check something, we say so.
- We list what we won’t be able to do. The limits of the protection are on the Security page.
- We only compare what can be checked. With a source and the date we checked it.
- We write in two languages, each in its own voice. The Russian and English texts are written separately, not translated from each other.
Who we are
Methmail is a product of METHMINE LLC, which also makes the other Methmine products. Methmail will run on separate infrastructure: other Methmine products and services will have no access to your email or account data.
Methmail is operated by METHMINE LLC, a company registered in Wyoming, USA. We don’t give the names of people. Courts and authorities in the USA, where the company is registered, in the countries where our servers are, and in the countries where our team members live, can compel us: what they’ll be able to demand.
To write to us about your data: privacy@methmail.com. We’ll reply by email; it may land in your spam folder: we’re a new sender.
Questions
Why don’t you give your names? We build privacy tools and live by the same rules ourselves. But we aren’t anonymous to everyone: METHMINE LLC is openly registered, and Stripe, which handles card payments, knows who receives the money. So we don’t claim that we can’t be found.
Why trust you if you’re not a company? Not just on our word. Everything we will keep about you will fit on one short list. We will publish it before launch. Every six months we will publish a transparency report: how many requests we received from authorities, how many we complied with, and what we handed over. You’ll be able to export your emails in standard formats (EML/MBOX) and your keys in OpenPGP format. We will open the source code of the Methmail web app before the closed beta, and the server code stays closed for now: what the open code will and won’t let you check.
